Cruelty Free Makeup Brands

January 14, 2021

Cruelty free makeup has become increasingly more popular. I’ve seen the requests for it increase as more people have become aware of which products are tested on animals. There is no U.S. law that requires animal testing and many feel animal testing is unnecessary, cruel, and outdated. There are so many cruelty free brands now that it is easy to avoid companies that still test on animals.

 Cruelty Free vs Vegan Makeup

There is a difference between cruelty free makeup and vegan makeup. In short, cruelty free does not test on animals and vegan means there are no animal products in the makeup. It is possible for a beauty brand to not test on animals but contain animal products and still be considered cruelty free. On the flip side, a vegan makeup product can contain no animal products but still test on animals. If you’re looking for both vegan and cruelty free, PETA has a comprehensive list of brands

Other Benefits Of Cruelty Free Makeup

Besides not being tested on animals, one of the benefits of using cruelty free makeup is that the products generally have less of the toxins and parabens, which makes the product gentle on our skin. If a cruelty free brand does not want to test on animals, often you’ll find they are more aware of ingredients and what is considered “cleaner” too. Because of this, these products are significantly less likely to irritate or promote breakouts in our skin.

Another plus to cruelty free brands is that most are budget friendly. While of course, you can find high end cruelty free brands, many of the makeup brands found in drugstores are cruelty free too. There is no need to break your budget to include cruelty free makeup.

As a makeup artist, offering cruelty free makeup products will be a make a break for some clients. One of my brides, Amanda, requested it and I was happy to provide that service. We did a natural glam look on her and she looked amazing! Check out my Instagram post to see the results and all the amazing cruelty free makeup products I was able to use!

How To Know A Makeup Product Is Cruelty Free

So many brands are cruelty free these days which makes them easy to purchase. There are times it can still be confusing to differentiate which are truly cruelty free though. One way to be sure is to look for the Leaping Bunny logo.

Since 1996, the Leaping Bunny Program, operated by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics in the US and Canada, has been connecting compassionate consumers to cruelty-free companies under its Corporate Standard of Compassion for Animals. Companies must pledge to end animal testing at all stages of product development in addition to recommitting to the program annually and being open to third party audits.”

Looking for products with the Leaping Bunny is the best way to ensure you are buying a cruelty free product.
